Nestled in the middle of farm country, Oskaloosa is a thriving community in south-central Iowa that has the values of a small town America and the amenities of a much larger city.

Oskaloosa is a city of about 11,000 residents about 60 miles southeast of Des Moines. Yet, the city features two private colleges, a civic center, a new elementary school complex, a recreation trail around the community, the Lacey Sport Complex, a symphony orchestra, two shopping malls, a hospital and a small airport.

Oskaloosa is a progressive, diversified city whose economy is based on retail, industry and agriculture. Oskaloosa’s retail sector includes a downtown mall, a Wal-Mart SuperCenter, and a vibrant downtown that features many small shops and restaurants. Oskaloosa’s industrial economy is anchored by heavy industry, a telecommunications company and a food processor.

Agriculture plays a significant role in the local economy ranging from small farms to the companies located at the World Food Park on the southeast side of the city. Oskaloosa also is close to a major agricultural center in Eddyville centered around Cargill, Ajinomoto and Wacker Biochem.

The Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group, which has been in existence since 1892, has dedicated itself to enhancing the local business environment. The Chamber’s mission is to make life better for those who live and work in the area by creating more and better jobs, and increasing the community tax base.

Oskaloosa is easily reached by highway, retail and airplane. Oskaloosa is situated along Highway 163, part of the Southeast Iowa Expressway from Burlington to Des Moines. The Union Pacific Railroad operates a rail line that runs through the heart of Oskaloosa. Also, the Oskaloosa Municipal Airport is located southeast of town.

Oskaloosa also offers a variety of recreational activities such as hunting, golfing on the city’s three golf courses, boating and biking on the recreational trail Oskaloosa offers many cultural attractions such as museums, art shows, festivals, circuses, rodeos, and stock car races at the Southern Iowa Speedway.

After a busy day of recreation, Oskaloosa offers people many dining and lodging establishments. Visitors can stay at six motels and there are a variety of restaurants to satisfy most tastes- whether it’s family cooking, Mexican, Chinese, or casual fine dining.
