Education Overview (Public & Private)
Fairfield, Iowa is a great place to learn. The Fairfield public school system is a part of the Fairfield Community School District and has nearly 2,500 students, teachers, administrators and staff. The public school system has four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Fairfield’s public schools spend $5,242 per student and the student/teacher ratio is 15:1. The average ACT composite score is 23.4 (National Average is 21.2) and the percentage of students taking the ACT is 68.2(National Average is 42). The community’s higher education needs are serviced by Indian Hills Community College which holds classes in the old Carnegie Library building.

Fairfield’s private school system is a part of the Southeast Webster Community School District and has nearly 400 students, teachers, administrators and staff. The private school system has two PK-12 schools and one K-12 school. There’s also a distinguished and accredited private university with over 900 students with a global reach unequaled in the region.

The environment for education is ripe here in Fairfield and everyone is involved. Our Parent-teacher organizations and booster clubs make larger communities jealous. The Parents have an online portal (http://www.fairfieldsfuture.org/) that allows them to monitor their child’s performance and update the student’s personal information. We have a new administrative center. Championship sports and activities, including world champion intelligence-based and problem-solving competitive teams like Destination ImagiNation and Odyssey of the Mind. In Fairfield, we’ve prioritized the education of our kids at the top of the list.

Elementary Schools
Pence Elementary – Pence has an enrollment of approximately 280 students and nearly 20 staff members that ensure a quality education program for all students. The school building is a double section building serving kindergarten through fifth grade as well as a preschool for students with disabilities. The school has a full computer lab, library, Title I reading program, and a Talented and Gifted Program. The building was built in the 1950’s and used to be used previous as a junior high school.  An extensive remodel of the entryway and stage is planned for 2008 to expand accessibility.

Washington Elementary – Washington has an enrollment of approximately 300 students. Washington is a double section building serving kindergarten through fifth grade with two special education classrooms. The original three story structure was opened in 1911. It served grades K-8. In 1968, a new educational wing was added to house kindergarten through second grade classes. Included in the addition were a multi-purpose room for physical education and lunch room. In 1981, the original structure was razed, and a new addition to house third through sixth grades and a central library were built. In 1996, two additions were added to the building. The East side housed a faculty work room and storage. The second addition to the South added another kindergarten room, vocal music, reading lab, and a library/computer lab.

Lincoln Elementary – Lincoln Elementary has an enrollment of approximately 135 students. The present school building was completed in 1975 with the edition completed in 1992. The older part contains seven classrooms that accommodate a single section of grades K-5, self-contained special education, an office, library, and multi-purpose room. The addition wraps around the outside of the multi-purpose room and houses Title 1 reading, computer lab, special education resource, a music/art room, and a teacher work room.

High School – Fairfield High School has an enrollment of approximately 630 students and approximately 72 staff members.  Current programs include science, math, social studies, English, agriculture education, career/technology, music, physical education, special education and numerous athletics and activities. The first high school was located in the Franklin Building on the site now occupied by Howard Park and served as the site from 1868 to 1913.  The next school was built on West Briggs where currently the DOT building is located.  That school burned to the ground on April 22, 1938 and the current building at 605 - 607 Broadway was constructed and completed in 1939 on 23.2 acres.  The dedication service was on May 21st, 1940 and the first graduating class was on May 28th, 1940.  The Superintendent at the time was W. G. Pence, the Board President was J. W. Ward and the Principal was J. F. T. Saur.  Architects were Keffer and Jones.  The cost of construction was approximately $550,000 and included state of the art science labs, an auditorium with seating for 850 and both girls and boys gymnasiums.  In 1984, an addition was added to include a Commons Area, new kitchen, a new library, a counseling office and a gymnasium expansion.  In the school year of 2001 - 2002, a new transportation building was constructed on South 20th Street, moving it from the high school site.  In doing so, the vocational auto and metals programs were moved to the original transportation building vacating an area that is currently used as the weight room.

Indian Hills Community College offers a wide range of classes at the Jefferson County Service Center in old Carnegie Library building. Four terms are offered a year starting in August, November, February and May. The standard academic week is four days long and classes meet Monday through Thursdays. Students are able to work at whatever pace their schedule allows.

Maharishi University of Management sits on the 272-acre former Parsons College campus. Founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi over 30 years ago, the university is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The University's student body of over 800 students is represented by nearly 60 nations. The University offers Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees in programs like Creative Arts, Sustainable Living, Computer Science, Management, Education, Literature, Mathematical Sciences, and the Science of Consciousness.
